Missed Connection Compensation: One Ticket vs. Separate Tickets

The most important fact after a missed connection is often hidden in the booking: were all flights issued as one reservation, or did you build the trip from separate tickets?

What to know

  • A single reservation can protect the journey through to the final ticketed destination.
  • Under EU rules, arriving more than three hours late may qualify even when the first flight’s delay was shorter.
  • Self-transfer itineraries usually leave more risk with the traveler.

Why one reservation matters

EU passenger rights can cover a missed connection when the flights were booked as one reservation, the rules apply to the journey, and extraordinary circumstances did not cause the delay. The relevant delay is normally measured at the final destination on that reservation.

With separate tickets, the second airline may treat you as a no-show even if the first flight arrived late. Travel insurance or a booking platform’s connection guarantee may be the better route in that situation.

Get rebooked before focusing on compensation

Ask the operating carrier or transfer desk to protect you on the next reasonable option. Confirm whether checked baggage will be retagged and whether an overnight wait requires a hotel. Compensation can be assessed after the immediate journey is secured.

Cases that usually do not qualify

Missing a connection because you arrived late at the gate, spent too long at the airport, or were delayed at security does not normally create the same airline compensation right. Minimum connection times also do not override a passenger’s obligation to be at the gate by the stated deadline.

Evidence to keep

Keep the full e-ticket receipt showing every segment and booking reference, both boarding passes, rebooking documents, delay notifications and the final arrival time. These establish that the itinerary was connected and show the total impact.
